My Personal Recap of the 2023 Big Game Commercials

It's no secret that the Big Game commercials have become part of the football experience — this year's was no exception. With 86 commercials between the 1st Quarter and the end of the 4th Quarter, companies had plenty of opportunities to create memorable ads that tugged on our heartstrings or made us laugh. From talking babies to nostalgic movie references, the 2023 Big Game commercials had something for everyone.

In this blog post, we're going to take a closer look at the 2023 Big Game commercials and analyze the common themes, memorable companies, and the overall sentiment. So, let's dive in and take a look at the 2023 Big Game commercials!

How many commercials were there?

As far as I counted, with my husband’s help, there were a total of 86 commercials shown between the start of the 1st Quarter, and the end of game play in the 4th Quarter. I did not count the commercials that happened pre-game and post-game play.

Were there any companies that had multiple commercials?

Yes, there was! Companies including Pepsi (Zero Sugar), Michelob Ultra (beer), TEMU (shopping app), and Tubi (streaming service) were the companies I noticed that had more than one commercial during the Big Game playtime.

What commercials did I absolutely love?

There was one TUBI commercial where it seemed like everyone’s TVs were switching to a different part of their smart TV, and I thought it was just genius. Some people legit freaked out over where the remote was, as if a toddler got a hold of the remote during the Big Game.

What commercials could have been better?

Personally, I could have gone without the Jesus propaganda commercials being thrown in. M&M’s commercial was plain confusing to me, as they are not really clear if the M&M characters were actually coming back or not.

What commercials pulled peoples’ heartstrings?

If you can remember, The Farmer’s Dog commercial and the Amazon commercial involving dogs was super heart-warming. Both of these commercials actually made my husband and I cry, and I always stand by the fact that a commercial is a good commercial, if you can remember the company the commercial was for. I could definitely remember each of these dog commercials being for The Farmer’s Dog and Amazon, respectively.

How many commercial breaks happened between football plays?

There were between 4-6 commercials between football play. For those that do not know, there are TV time-outs built within the football schedule, just like time-outs that football teams have during regular gameplay.

What was a common theme in the 2023 Big Game commercials?

From what I could see, there was a common theme of cringe during the 2023 Big Game Commercials. With companies like E-Trade using the talking babies with no facial emotion, but talking mouths, and commercials paid for by bad mobile games, cringe was used to companies’ advantages. Another theme I saw was pushing for Electric Vehicles (EVs). Companies like Jeep and RAM had their commercial being centered around EVs and the benefits they have for our future environment.

How many commercial breaks were there during gameplay?

There was a total of 24 commercial breaks shown between the start of the 1st Quarter, and the end of game play in the 4th Quarter.

What did I think of the commercials during the Big Game this year?

Overall, the commercials shown during the 2023 Big Game were a 7/10 rating in my personal opinion. I think the common sentiment during the commercials this year was nostalgia.
