Budget Friendly Room Decor Ideas

Whether you are in college, or an adult that is trying to have all of their stuff together, having a room that you can call your own is vital to keeping yourself sane. If you like decorating your space in an inspiring way, it’s hard to do that at times when the things you like the most are expensive and not really in your tax bracket to buy.

These are some budget friendly room decor ideas that I have used in my own home, which have made my home a curated space for my creativity. These room decor ideas are easy to do, relatively cheap to buy, and customizable to your liking. I will have items linked within, so you can visualize these decor ideas.

Let’s get decorating!

Make Your Own Gallery Wall

Gallery walls are a great idea for showcasing what you like, and what inspires you, while taking up blank space on that big wall that you just don’t know how to decorate.

You don’t have to buy prints online and fancy frames to make a gallery wall.

Here is what you can do to make a budget friendly gallery wall:

  1. Buy cheap frames that fit your aesthetic from Walmart or Ikea

  2. Print out your own pictures and affirmations from Pinterest

  3. Spray paint the wooden part of the frame to your room accent color, or a color that pulls you into looking at the gallery wall

Items you will need to accomplish this gallery wall:

  • Frames

  • Printed pictures & affirmations

  • Spray paint (if you want to customize even further)

  • Wall hooks/command strips to hang frames

Chalkboard Wall Stickers

I didn’t know that you could buy adhesive chalkboard wall stickers, until I saw them whilst roaming around at Ikea! These stickers are amazing for so many reasons! Some of them being:

  • writing important dates

  • drawing random doodles

  • adding to your grocery list

  • welcome phrase for new people that walk in the door

The options are truly endless for these awesome chalkboard wall stickers.

Items you will need to utilize these wall stickers:

  • Chalkboard wall stickers that you can find at Ikea or online

  • Chalkboard markers that you can find at any craft store

  • A place to hang them up

  • Going above and beyond: a cute frame to outline the stickers

Canvas String Art

If you have an imagination, and some free time on your hands, you can make your designs come to life with canvas string art!

Making your own string art on a canvas is great stress relief, while also customizable to your liking!

I love canvas string art because it is a very popular buy on Etsy that you can create by yourself, at a much cheaper price point.

Items you will need to achieve canvas string art:

  • Any canvas size you want

  • Straight pins: 1-1/4”

  • String to match the color of the picture you are creating

  • Foam for backing (so you don’t poke yourself with pins)

  • Push pins or command strips to hang your masterpiece

Mirrors Make the Illusion of a Bigger Space

If you have a small room that you want to maximize the space in, use adhesive mirrors on your wall.

They make a great accent piece, and you can buy mirrors of different shapes and sizes that fit your design aesthetic.

I couldn’t ever find a full length mirror that wasn’t too bulky, too expensive, or really my design preference. So I decided to make my own and I was so happy with the outcome!

Overhead lighting can be a bit much when all you want is a little ambiance with a hint of color in your room.

Color changing strip lights are a game changer when it comes to lighting up your space.

There are so many different strip lights you can find out there that can change colors depending on your mood at the moment, and also how big your space is that you want to light up.

Items you will need to light up your room:

Letter Boards and Customizable Lightboxes

I love being able to put my own jokes or sayings on my letter board in my office. There are puns that I love making people shake their head at when they read it, and it’s a great way to start conversation.

Letter boards and customizable lightboxes are amazing for transforming your space into something your own.

There are so many variations of both of these that you can find, but my best suggestion is to look at Amazon, Walmart or Target. That is where I’ve had the most luck, at least.

Items you will need to achieve these customizable pieces:
